Position Description

The Professional Staff Nurse is a Registered Nurse and vital member of the Same Day Services team at UPMC Somerset, accountable for delivering high‑quality, compassionate patient care. This casual position works Monday–Friday with varying start times (6:00 AM, 7:30 AM, 9:30 AM) and includes a rotating on‑call requirement. The nurse uses independent judgment, strong communication, and collaboration with physicians, colleagues, patients, and families to support optimal patient outcomes while upholding professional nursing standards.

Responsibilities:

  • Build strong, trusting relationships with patients, families, and the interdisciplinary team. Demonstrate accountability, professionalism, and respect for cultural differences while contributing to a positive and supportive work environment.
  • Apply the nursing process within a Relationship‑Based Care model to assess patient needs, identify clinical priorities, and develop individualized plans of care. Use critical thinking to address clinical, psychosocial, safety, and spiritual needs throughout the patient’s episode of care.
  • Communicate clearly and proactively with physicians and team members, translating patient assessments and care needs into actionable steps. Ensure documentation is thorough, accurate, and promotes continuity and safety across all caregivers.
  • Provide clear, tailored education to patients and families, supporting them through procedures, recovery, and transitions of care. Utilize adult learning principles and contribute to staff development by supporting students, new hires, and colleagues; may serve as a preceptor.
  • Participate in unit‑specific quality improvement efforts and identify opportunities to enhance patient safety and experience. Incorporate evidence‑based practice, discuss improvement opportunities during interdisciplinary rounds, and advocate for changes that improve patient outcomes.
  • Demonstrate commitment to ongoing professional development and active participation in shared governance and team initiatives. Adapt to workflow changes, support departmental needs, and serve as an engaged partner within the care team.
  • Minimum 1 year experience. 1-year critical care nursing experience or previous phase 1 & 2 recovery experience.
  • BSN preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIH)
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
  • Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
